How Hotel Groups Cut Room-Service Delivery Time by 40% With Cross-Floor Robots

The problem: stairs, lifts and waiting

Room service is a margin problem. Staff spend more time walking than serving, and guests judge the hotel by the 20 minutes they spend waiting for a bottle of water.

The pilot

Eight cross-floor delivery robots were deployed across two properties in the group, covering 320 rooms over 11 floors. Each robot pairs with the elevator controller, so it can call, ride and release a lift without staff intervention. Lockable compartments keep every order sealed until the guest enters a PIN.

Results after 90 days

  • Average room-service delivery: 22 minutes down to 13.
  • Front-desk calls about missing deliveries: down 61 percent.
  • Night-shift food and beverage revenue: up 18 percent.
  • Robot fleet utilisation: 74 percent of scheduled hours.

What made it work

Three decisions mattered more than the hardware: mapping every floor before the first shift, giving housekeeping a permanent docking bay, and letting the front desk dispatch orders directly from the property management system.

Lessons for other operators

Start with one floor and one shift, measure the walking distance you remove, then scale. Robots that are treated as a novelty fail; robots that are wired into the nightly routine pay for themselves in under a year.
